How Often Should You Professionally Clean Your Home? A Realistic Guide

January 25, 2026 · Diamond Shine Pro

Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly — what's actually right for your household? We break it down by home size, lifestyle, and budget.

One of the most common questions we get from new clients across Bellingham and Whatcom County is: how often should I have my home professionally cleaned? The honest answer is that it depends on several factors — but there are some solid guidelines that apply to most households.

Here's how we typically help clients find the right frequency for their home, lifestyle, and budget.

Weekly Cleaning: Who It's Right For

Weekly professional cleaning makes the most sense for households with young children, multiple pets, or high foot traffic. If your home gets heavy daily use — cooking every night, kids coming in from outside, pets on the furniture — a weekly clean keeps things consistently maintained rather than playing catch-up.

Weekly service also works well for clients who entertain frequently, or who simply prefer to have their home at its best at all times without investing their own time in it. In our experience, weekly clients often find their homes are cleaner on average than they could maintain on their own.

Bi-Weekly Cleaning: The Most Popular Option

Bi-weekly (every two weeks) is our most popular service frequency in Bellingham and across Whatcom County. It works well for most households — couples, small families, and single-person homes with moderate traffic.

A bi-weekly clean keeps dust, bathroom soap scum, and kitchen grease from building up to the point where it becomes difficult to remove. It's also the frequency at which professional cleaning provides the most visible impact — clients consistently tell us they notice the difference every time we visit.

Monthly Cleaning: A Good Starting Point

Monthly service suits smaller households with lower traffic — couples without children, individuals, or those who do light maintenance cleaning themselves between visits. It's also a good starting point for clients who are new to professional cleaning and want to see how it works for their household before committing to a higher frequency.

One thing to be aware of: with monthly cleaning, the first few visits often take longer because there's more to address. Once the home is at a baseline standard, monthly visits become quicker and more cost-effective.

Seasonal Deep Cleans

Regardless of your regular cleaning frequency, we recommend a full deep clean at least twice a year — once in spring (after Bellingham's wet winter) and once in autumn (before closing up the house for the colder months). These seasonal deep cleans tackle the areas that routine maintenance can't reach: inside appliances, grout scrubbing, window tracks, behind furniture, and more.

Many of our clients in Ferndale and Blaine combine a monthly or bi-weekly maintenance schedule with two seasonal deep cleans per year — it's a cost-effective way to keep the home in excellent condition year-round.

Getting the Right Fit

If you're unsure what frequency is right for your home, the easiest way to find out is to start with a deep clean and assess how quickly your home returns to a state that bothers you. That gives you a practical answer based on your actual household rather than a general guideline.
